Problems with Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure (CPAP)

Patients are referred and come to our office because of difficulties with the use of CPAP equipment, such as:

  • Strap and/or headgear irritation
  • Air Flow problems
  • Mask leaks
  • Mask discomfort due to poor fit
  • Restrictive movements during sleep
  • Therapy appears to be ineffective
  • Latex allergy
  • Claustrophobic associations
  • Unconcious removal of apparatus
  • Disturbed sleep due to presence of apparatus
  • Disturbed sleep of patient or bed partner due to noise
  • Pressure on upper lip causing tooth related problems


American Academy of Sleep Medicine Protocol

In February 2006, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (a national organization of sleep physicians and other health professionals) issued a statement regarding Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT). The Academy stated that OAT is recommended when:

  • Patients have tried lifestyle adjustments such as sleep positions changes or weight loss but continue to experience primary snoring or mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and thus require further treatment
  • Patients with moderate to severe OSA have been treated with CPAP therapy and do not tolerate the treatment well
  • Patients refuse CPAP therapy treatment
  • Patients refuse or are not candidates for surgical procedures , such as, tonsillectomy and adenoidecotmy, uvuopalatopharyngoplasty (UPP),
